We've all walked past those wooden signs in the forest without quite knowing what to do with them. Vita Parcours are free fitness circuits set up in nature, designed for moving at your own pace, alone or with family. Geneva has eight of them, and most people miss their full potential.
This guide covers all 8 trails in the canton, the best spots for outdoor training in Geneva, and shows you how to turn a trip to a Vita Parcours into a real workout.
What is a Vita Parcours?
Born in Switzerland in 1968, the Vita Parcours (or Zurich Vitaparcours) is a free outdoor fitness circuit set up in the forest. Along a 2 to 3 kilometre route, around 15 stations offer about 40 exercises, illustrated on wooden signs. You go whenever you want, for free, at your own level. The concept is validated by the Swiss Federal Institute of Sport in Magglingen, and there are nearly 500 of them across Switzerland.
Each station has a colour code that shows the type of effort. This is the key to training smart:
Yellow
Mobility and agility. To warm up, loosen and prepare the body.
Red
Strength. Pull-ups, push-ups, planks: muscle building.
Blue
Endurance. Jumps, coordination and cardio work between stations.
The 8 Vita Parcours trails in the canton of Geneva
Each trail has its own feel. Here's how to choose between them based on where you live and what you're looking for.
Versoix
State forest with a barbecue area, tables and benches: perfect for combining sport with a family outing. Very easy to reach by Léman Express, Versoix-Gare stop.
Bellevue
With 30 metres of elevation gain, it runs alongside Bioparc Genève and offers a bit more relief than the others. Well served by the TPG, two car parks nearby.
Grand-Saconnex
Short and flat, in a leafy park that's part of a large sport-for-all area. Ideal for a quick session after work or a first try with the family.
Vernier
Wooded with a slight slope, built into the sports centre facilities. On-site parking and TPG bus 51 at the Vernier-Écu stop, it doesn't get easier than this.
Onex
A strip of forest that cuts you off from the dense urban fabric, with a drinking-water fountain along the route. Just nearby, Parc des Évaux also offers measured running loops (1.5, 5 and 10 km).
Carouge
Dense forest a stone's throw from central Carouge, with a hilly route that lends itself to hill work and strength training. For those who really want to sweat close to the city.
Thônex
Flat and a bit longer than the others, on the edge of the countryside. The right choice for clocking up easy kilometres with no elevation to worry about. Served by TPG bus lines 1, 31 and 34.
Gy
Deep in the Geneva countryside on the left bank, open and very quiet, far from urban noise. Ideal for gentle endurance and clearing your head. Bring the car, access is via small country roads.
Nyon-Trélex, just across the border
On the Vaud border, above Nyon, the Trélex trail is worth the trip for its setting: open nature, views of the lake and the Alps, and a hilly route for those who love a climb. Free parking at the start.

How to turn a Vita Parcours into a real workout
Most people walk the trail and stop at two or three pieces of equipment. A shame, because with a bit of method, a Vita Parcours is worth a full strength session, and a free one at that. The idea isn't to do everything, but to structure it.
- Warm up on the first yellow stations: mobility and joints before you push, especially in cold weather.
- Run between stations rather than walking: that's what turns the outing into continuous cardio work.
- Actually do the red stations: slow, controlled sets of pull-ups, push-ups and planks, not three quick reps.
- Finish on the yellow stations for flexibility and a proper cool-down.
Advice fromNicolas De IesoUse the colour codes as a ready-made programme. Cardio by running between stations, strength on the red ones in slow sets, mobility on the yellow ones to finish. In an hour, you've worked cardio, strength and flexibility without setting foot in a gym.

The rules to know for training in the forest in Geneva
Nothing restrictive, but a few things to know so you can enjoy the trails while respecting the surroundings.
- Dogs on a lead from 1 April to 15 July in woods and forests, to protect wildlife during the birthing season.
- Free and open all year round: Geneva's forests aren't fenced, and walking is allowed, even off the paths.
- No seasonal closures on the Geneva side, unlike some French ranges that close in summer due to fire risk.
- Respect the wildlife's peace and stay on marked routes in sensitive areas.
