The essentials
  • The giantThe Course de l'Escalade draws over 50,000 runners into the Old Town, on 5 and 6 December 2026.
  • The full setFrom the May marathon to the October HYROX, Geneva covers running, trail, triathlon, swimming and cycling.
  • The ruleA goal with no date stays a wish. With a date, it becomes a plan. And a plan is something you prepare for.

Geneva doesn't lack gyms. What's often missing is a good reason to train. A race number, a date, a concrete goal: that's what turns sessions into real progress.

No copy-paste from the organisers' websites here. Each event is examined with a coach's eye: who it's really for, how long you need to prepare, and what no one tells you before the start line.

19th edition19 April 2026

Geneva sports event no.1Course des Ponts de Genève

The most accessible urban race in Geneva. You link up the city's bridges, between the Rhône and the Arve, on a flat, flowing course starting from the Queue d'Arve sports centre. Two simple formats: 10.6 km running, 8 km walking. It's the perfect race number for a first goal without any fear.

2026 edition over. Next edition in spring 2027, ideal for aiming at a first 10 km.

Flat course, so it's tempting. The trap of a first 10 km is going out too fast on the early bridges. Settle into a steady pace and save your legs for the end, you'll finish much stronger.
44th edition25-26 April 2026

Geneva sports event no.220km de Lausanne

An hour from Geneva, one of the biggest races in Switzerland. Three distances for every profile: 5 km, 10 km and the iconic 20 km, plus the Apéro'Run and a walk. The Lausanne backdrop, the lake behind it and an electric atmosphere from start to finish.

2026 edition over. A spring classic worth planning for 2027.
What no one tells you

The course is hillier than its reputation suggests. The climb arrives exactly when your legs start to tire.

If you're preparing the 20 km from Geneva, build hills into your runs. Your body needs to know the gradient before race day, otherwise Lausanne will make you pay for it in the second half.
20th edition9-10 May 2026

Geneva sports event no.3Generali Genève Marathon

The biggest running event in Geneva. Marathon, half, 10 km, 5 km, relay and races for everyone: there's a format for every level. The course starts in the Geneva countryside and finishes in the heart of the city, facing the Jet d'Eau. A route known for being fast, perfect for chasing a personal best.

2026 edition over. 2027 early registration often opens very early, so now's the time to set the goal.
What no one tells you

The fast course makes you start too quickly. The countryside at the start is deceptive, the real wall hits in the final stretch through the city.

A marathon isn't won at the 10th kilometre, it's lost at the 32nd. Work on your target pace and your long runs for weeks, race day will simply be the reward for the work.

Sixteen weeks is the right horizon for a well-built first marathon. See how I prepare a running goal.

15th edition29-31 May 2026

Geneva sports event no.4MaXi-Race Annecy

An hour from Geneva, the big trail event around Lake Annecy. From short, accessible formats to very demanding distances with serious elevation, all in a setting of mountains and turquoise water that's hard to match. A real immersion in trail running.

What no one tells you

It's not the distance that breaks you, it's the cumulative elevation and the time spent on your feet. Your quads often give out on the descents before your lungs do.

In trail, the key work isn't speed, it's strength endurance in the legs and fuelling over several hours. The descent needs as much training as the climb.
Legendary trail26-28 June 2026

Geneva sports event no.5Marathon du Mont-Blanc

In Chamonix, an hour from Geneva, one of the most prestigious trails in the world. Eight events from 10 km to 90 km, plus the fearsome Vertical Kilometre. Thousands of runners come to take on the mountain in a legendary setting. A goal you earn, and one that marks a runner's life.

What no one tells you

The trap is the descent, not the climb. And the altitude that changes your breathing the moment it gets seriously steep.

The mountain doesn't forgive improvisation. Beyond the physical side, it's managing effort at altitude and being solid on the descents that makes the difference. That's prepared in advance, not on race day.

A goal of this scale needs a progressive plan over several months. Discover my sports event preparation.

36th edition4-5 July 2026

Geneva sports event no.6Genève Triathlon

Swimming in the Léman facing the Jet d'Eau, cycling along the waterfront, running by the lake: the Geneva triathlon sets up its village at the Eaux-Vives beach. Six formats, from the Découverte built for first-timers to the Half for the experienced, solo or relay. An exceptional setting to take on the triple effort.

What no one tells you

Open-water swimming is nothing like the pool. With no reference points and no lane line, many panic at the start. Test the lake before race day.

The three disciplines are intimidating, but the real subject is the transitions. Running on cycling legs is something you train for. For a first triathlon, go for the Découverte format, no hesitation.

I build the preparation around your weakest of the three disciplines. Learn more.

2nd edition9-11 October 2026

Geneva sports event no.7HYROX Geneva

After a first edition that drew over 10,000 participants in 2025, HYROX returns to Palexpo. The format is identical worldwide: 8 kilometres of running broken up by 8 strength stations, from the sled push to wall balls. You don't need to be the best runner or the strongest in the gym, you need to be both. And above all, to keep linking it all together.

What no one tells you

It's not the stations that hurt, it's the transitions. Going back to running on legs drained by the sled, that's the real wall of HYROX.

I'm not a certified HYROX coach, I'm a strength and conditioning coach. And the good news is that you can prepare a HYROX very well in an ordinary gym, with no specialised box. It's all in the run-to-station flow.

I've written the complete guide to preparing for it in Geneva. Read the HYROX Geneva 2026 guide.

Geneva sports event no.8Cyclotour du Léman

The biggest mass-participation cycling event in Switzerland, exceptionally moved to autumn in 2026. Three routes from 64 to 176 km around the lake, starting from Lausanne or Évian. No clock, no ranking: you ride for the pleasure, the scenery and the group. Accessible depending on the distance you choose.

What no one tells you

The danger is the October cold at the start, and the mid-ride slump if you haven't eaten early enough.

No clock, so no performance pressure. But 112 or 176 km is still long. The real challenge is endurance and comfort on the bike to last for hours without breaking down.
48th edition · 50,000 runners5-6 December 2026

Geneva sports event no.9Course de l'Escalade

It's the biggest running race in Switzerland, by far: over 50,000 runners take over the Old Town every first weekend of December. On paper, 7.3 kilometres sounds short. In reality, the cobblestones, the sharp climbs and the narrow streets make it far more demanding than it looks. There's something for everyone: the Walking for walkers, the two-person relay, the costumed Marmite, and the timed races for those who want a finish time.

What no one tells you

The real trap is the start. You go out too fast, carried by the crowd and the atmosphere, and you pay for it on the first climb. And in December in Geneva, cold muscles are unforgiving: a serious warm-up changes everything.

Don't run the Escalade like a flat 7 km. Work on short hills and surges in training, because that's exactly what breaks legs in the Old Town.

Six to ten weeks are enough to prepare it well, ideally with an outside eye on your pace. See my race preparation.

88th edition · Swiss heritage19-20 December 2026

Geneva sports event no.10Coupe de Noël

The oldest sporting event in the canton, listed as Swiss intangible heritage. The idea: 100 metres of swimming in La Rade, along the Jardin Anglais, in water at 6 or 7 degrees. Over 4,000 swimmers take the plunge every year, before rushing to the giant wood-fired hot tub. A unique challenge, festive and deeply Genevan.

What no one tells you

The cold shock as you enter the water blocks your breathing. Those who succeed aren't the fastest, they're the ones who've swum in the cold beforehand.

Nicolas De Ieso, personal trainer in GenevaAdvice fromNicolas De Ieso
Here the challenge isn't physical, it's mental and thermal. A hundred metres is short, but water at 6 degrees takes your breath away. Gradual cold acclimatisation changes everything, and it can't be improvised the day before.

Frequently asked questions about sports events in Geneva

What are the major sports events in Geneva in 2026?+
The biggest are the Course de l'Escalade (over 50,000 runners, on 5 and 6 December), the Generali Genève Marathon (9-10 May), HYROX Geneva at Palexpo (9-11 October), the Genève Triathlon (4-5 July) and the Coupe de Noël (19-20 December). Around the lake, the Cyclotour du Léman, the 20km de Lausanne and the Marathon du Mont-Blanc round out the season.
Which race should I choose for a first one in Geneva?+
For a first goal, aim for a short distance and a flowing course: the Course des Ponts, the 10 km of the Geneva Marathon, the Escalade Walking or the Découverte format of the Genève Triathlon. The idea isn't to chase a time, but the joy of crossing the line.
How long does it take to prepare for a marathon or a trail?+
Expect 12 to 16 weeks for a first marathon, 8 to 10 weeks for a 10 km, and 14 to 20 weeks for a mountain trail like the Marathon du Mont-Blanc. The key factor isn't raw duration but consistency and gradual build-up of the load.
Can you prepare for a HYROX in Geneva without a specialised gym?+
Yes. You can prepare a HYROX very well in an ordinary gym, with no dedicated box. The key is to train the flow between the running and the strength stations, which is the real difficulty of the event. All the details are in the HYROX Geneva 2026 guide.
How do you avoid injuries during preparation?+
Increase your volume by less than 10% per week, build in strength training from the start, and never neglect recovery. Having support means you can adjust the load to your signals, which is often what separates a successful build-up from an avoidable injury.
Where can you train in Geneva to prepare for a race?+
The lake waterfront for long runs, the hillsides and slopes for gradient work, and a gym for strength training. Nicolas De Ieso coaches his clients in Versoix, in Servette or at home, with a programme structured around the goal.
